Okay, I’d never talk badly about one of Canada’s coolest guys, but Seth Rogen has kinda shaped how we see weed culture. It’s not totally his fault, but he really helped create that ‘stoner’ image in pop culture. It might be a step up from Cheech and Chong, but it’s still often seen as a bit… lazy.

With everything feeling a bit crazy in the world (let’s not get too deep, though!), I’ve found so much comfort with my amazing stoner girl friends. We’re there for each other, sending a little green to pals who are running low before payday, sharing funny memes to escape the news, and most importantly, we’re careful. We puff-puff-don’t-pass – seriously, keep your COVID germs away from me, friend! I’m not messing around.

Guys Used to Own Weed Culture. Now There’s a Fresh Vibe!
rnOkay, so women have *always* enjoyed weed (duh!), but like so many things we choose to do (cue the eye-roll at patriarchy), we often get judged for it.rnrnThink about it: if a guy smokes weed daily, he might just be called a slacker. But if a woman does, people often assume she has a big problem.rnrnLuckily, legalization has really opened things up for stoner girl culture. There’s still not a ton out there about women who love to get high, which means we have this awesome, blank canvas to fill in ourselves!rnrnWeed is now seen in a much kinder light for stoner girls. It’s becoming about self-care, a fun social activity, a way to handle anxiety, and even help with period pain (amazing!).rnrnEven big businesses are noticing! Now we can get cool weed-infused skincare products.rnrnBut what really makes a ‘stoner girl’? We’re all so different, but after about ten years of ‘research’ (which mostly involved smoking a lot of weed with other women, wink wink), I think I’ve figured out the most important ingredients:rn
Our Stoner Girl Heroes
rnHonestly, there aren’t a ton of famous stoner girl figures out there yet, so we don’t have many stereotypes (except that we all love comfy hoodies, which is just a fact!). I don’t have scientific proof, but I’ve noticed a super strong connection between stoner girls and girls who like girls. I mean, who can blame them? Girls are pretty awesome!rnrnAnd speaking of awesome, let’s talk about Rihanna. She’s a huge pop star (and, by the way, probably the most beautiful woman ever!), who openly and proudly loves weed. I seriously want the image of her rolling a blunt on her security guard’s head to live in my brain forever.rnrnOf course, it’s not just Rihanna. Our fellow weed enthusiast, Whoopi Goldberg, adores Mary Jane so much she even wrote a sweet tribute to her vape pen, which she calls Sippy. Sarah Silverman is another favorite, and more and more amazing women are opening up about their love for this plant. That’s how we got the totally unexpected and iconic duo of Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg.rn
Our Special Ritual
rnOne of the coolest and most important things about being a stoner girl is ‘The Ritual.’rnrnIt’s all about setting up that perfect vibe, just right for enjoying your high.rnrnFor me, it’s all about how my weed stuff looks – I love it to be color-coordinated!rnrnI get this super satisfying, feng-shui feeling when I open my pink stash box. Inside, I find my pink grinder, king-size papers, my pink vape, my Hello Kitty rolling tray, and my lovely green buds. I love rolling or getting my glittery pink bong ready, truly enjoying every single step of ‘The Ritual.’rnrnAnd it’s SUPER important for me to say that none of my stoner girl friends are into the whole pink thing like I am! I just have this deep-seated idea that if I color-coordinate my life, it’ll feel a bit more organized. But for all of us, ‘The Ritual’ is a key part of getting high – it’s our little bit of ‘me time.’rn
Our Groovy Tunes
rnGetting the right music going is a super important part of ‘The Ritual.’ We’re talking about endlessly scrolling through carefully put-together playlists to find that *exact* mood. Stoner girls have all kinds of musical tastes, but pop music is definitely starting to get on board with stoner girl culture. (Remember when we all freaked out when Lady Gaga confessed she smoked too much weed in front of Beyoncé and totally panicked? I mean, who wouldn’t in front of a living legend?!).rnrnStoner girl music is also getting more popular. Our very own Ontario band, Partner, has this awesome stoner girl anthem called “˜Everybody Knows.’ It’s full of moments we can all relate to – like getting stuck staring at your own reflection while grabbing snacks at the store, suddenly thinking everyone is watching your super high self buying three bags of Doritos.rn
rnThese days, everyone’s creating content, and stoner girls are definitely making tons of it, all about their love for the green stuff! As a proud millennial, I’m just barely peeking into the cool, shadowy world of the next gen of stoner girl content creators, but trust me, it’s thriving out there. Think YouTubers, bloggers, Instagram stars, and TikTok queens – they’re all building a brand new stoner girl empire in this post-legalization era.rnrnAnd for more traditional media, we’ve always held onto those few stoner girl heroes we’ve seen in movies. The absolute queen? Anna Faris in the seriously amazing *Smiley Face*. But stoner girls have really found their groove on TV. They’re everywhere now, from Ilana and Abbi in *Broad City*, to Van in *Atlanta*, to Nadia in *Russian Doll*. It almost feels like a TV show isn’t truly ‘prestige’ unless a woman is lighting up!rn
Not Giving a Single Care!
rnThis, my friends, is probably the *most* important thing about being a stoner girl. It’s about realizing that enjoying weed is a genuinely wonderful part of life, with so many good things about it. Even with all the judging and guilt that sometimes gets thrown our way, we totally get that it’s okay to enjoy and embrace something that makes us happy – and to honestly not care what anyone else thinks!rnrnToo long; didn’t read? Here’s the gist: Stoner girls are absolutely crushing it.rn
